Memorial University Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Tra Vinh University

TVU, 25.10. 2016 – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Memorial University, Canada and Tra Vinh University was officially signed. Mr. Glenn Blackwood, the Vice-president of Memorial University was the signatory of Memorial University while Associate Professor – Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh, the Rector of Tra Vinh University, signed on behalf of Tra Vinh University.

This MoU is valid for a period of 5 years (2016 – 2021). Prior to this agreement, both sides have established a long-term, co-operative relationship since Tra Vinh University was a community college. In particular, the Canadian partner university (Memorial University) has annually offered 5 scholarships to TVU students. TVU has also hosted visiting scholars from Memorial University (Marine Institute) for academic activities.

Mr. Glenn Blackwood was glad to confirm the stable, co-operative relationship between the two organizations. Mr. Blackwood was also pleasantly surprised by the significant development of the university within the last 10 years in terms of facilities and training programs.

The mutual agreements between the two sides create a wide range of academic and professional development opportunities for lecturers and students of both TVU and the Memorial University (Marine Institute). More precisely, lecturers of TVU can take PhD program at the Memorial University funded by either Canadian Government or Vietnamese Government. Additionally, students of both institutes can take internships or exchange programs to gain international experiences.

Associate Professor – Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh expressed his firm belief in the further development of the co-operative relationship between Memorial University and Tra Vinh University. After signing the MoU, Mr. Blackwood also had a meeting with more than 200 TVU students. The students received 5 scholarships from the Vice-president of Memorial University with the total value up to CAD 1,000.

The research team of University of Technology of King Mongkut Thonburi, Thailand made a visit to Tra Vinh University.

On May 12, 2016, four researchers in the fields of Post-Harvest and Biotechnology of University of Technology of King Mongkut Thonburi, Thailand had a meeting with the faculty staff to orient their future research cooperation about Post-Harvest technology.

Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, the Vice Rector of the university also came to welcome the delegation. He said “The world is flat so distance is not a problem and so we can come, share ideas and work with each other as we wish. To begin our research, we should think of a particular task. I believe, after this meaningful meeting, the two sides will share a common goal to serve the community.”

Assoc. Prof., Dr. Chalermchai Wongs-Aree stated “The School of Agriculture and Aquaculture – TVU has training courses similar to the ones at University of Technology of King Mongkut Thonburi. It is expected to learn more about each other to set lights for future cooperation on training and research.

“Each year, our school offers many scholarships to the students and teachers from our partner schools at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.” He also added “TVU students will have plenty of scholarship opportunities to enter our school.”

Dr. Lam Thai Hung, Acting Dean of the School of Agriculture and Aquaculture thanked the delegation for this meaningful trip. He said “Both schools have strengths in agriculture and have successes in tissue culture and post-harvest technology. This creates a bridge to promote cooperation on postgraduate training in response to applied research.”

On this occasion, Dr. Lam Thai Hung invited the members, researchers, from University of Technology of King Mongkut Thonburi to attend the Viet-Hung Conference in September, 2016 hosted by Tra Vinh University.

Upon the trip, the delegation made a visit to laboratories, the library and the dormitory at the university.
